The Kerala Women's Commission, a statutory organization under state Government was first constituted under Section 5 of Kerala Women's Commission Act 1990 (Act 17 of 1995) as per GO (P) No. 9/96/SWD dt. 14-3-96 with a Chairperson and six members, to improve the status of women in the State of Kerala and to inquire into unfair practices affecting women and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

       On completion of the term of 5 years of the first commission headed by Smt. Sugathakumari (Chairperson)on 13-3-2001, second Women's Commission took charge on 26-3-2001 Smt. Justice D. Sreedevi has taken over charge as Chairperson in the second Women's Commission on 19-4-2001, which was dissolved by Government on 19-4-2002 by Ordinance No. 5 of 2002-Kerala Women's Commission (Amendment) Ordinance, 2002. The commission was reconstituted with Smt. M. Kamalam as Chairperson, Smt. P. Kulsu and Smt. Lissy jose as members as per G.O (P) No. 13/2002/SWD dt. 13.5.2002 and they have taken over charge on 14-5-2002
